Bend Shed

The Bend Shed — a reference to the home’s roof shape and location in Bend, OR — borders the line of a backyard cottage and an urban cabin. Built as a DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit) in the rear yard of a run-of-the-mill bungalow style home.

The aim for the project was to create a retreat for the owner’s family that blended-in with the neighborhood but was distinctively modern. Analogous sought to achieve this by first creating a roof line and height that was consistent with the neighborhood — secondly by using materials that reflected the lumber mill history of the town and local vernacular present in the area, i.e. wood products. Cedar shingles and fir plywood feature heavily throughout the building that takes its shed like form from optimized solar angles. By introducing a large cantilevered roof that blocks harsh summer sun while allowing low angle winter sun, we create the skeleton from which to work with.

This early objective was a driver for the rest of the house. Celebrating light became the natural nucleus point: kitchen, dining, living and and a connection to the outdoor patio were all laid out in an efficient linear fashion. A shared bath, main bedroom, and a laundry/bike garage round out the ground level. A bonus loft that is accessible by a ship ladder adds two more bedrooms and a lounge area making efficient use of the tight land use square footage requirements.
